The Mirage is a trusted basic powered wheelchair from Invacare that has been around for a number of years. Simple and affordable, it is usable both indoors and outdoors, and has several options to configure the seating on it.

A level above the more basic “boxed product” powerchairs like Roma’s Marbella, the Mirage can be set up with a number of seat sizes, as well as with a choice of seating options such as a tension-adjustable backrest and a gas-spring operated backrest recliner. Different legrests are also available, as well as other accessories such as a comfort cushion and headrest should they be required. While these are not capable of catering to those with more advanced seating and posture needs, it nonetheless makes the Mirage more comfortable than more basic chairs that take the “one size fits all” approach.
Featuring a compact design, the Mirage is usable both indoors and out. There is a choice of either pneumatic or solid front and rear tyres, and a kerb-rider can be fitted to climb obstacles if necessary.
The Mirage can be disassembled and folded for transport or storage if required, with easily removable split battery boxes, and the backrest, armrest and legrests all removable, while the frame folds up. However, it should be cautioned that the frame remains heavy to lift, as the motors and wheels remain attached, so realistically the Mirage will take two people to lift into and out of a car. Despite this, it does allow the wheelchair to be transported occasionally, for example when being taken on holiday.
While the Mirage has largely been superseded by Invacare’s Fox, it remains available for those after a “classic” rear-wheel drive powered wheelchair that is nonetheless custom built for the user.
